Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump might have picked his vice presidential candidate, but his campaign is still missing some key ingredients.
Reports of poor coordination, inadequate staffing and a lack of money are starting to make some Republicans nervous; and when you look at the numbers, you can see why.
“Having worked in GOP grassroots politics for more than 20 years I can honestly say I have never seen a Republican presidential campaign with this weak of a field presence,” a Florida Republican told Politico, commenting on the lack of coordination.

The Huffington Post describes the Trump campaign’s infrastructure as “severely underdeveloped” and in some areas of the country “it appears to be non-existent.” The website claims its staffers made calls to the Trump campaign offices in each of the 50 states, but only six of those offices had anyone answering the phones. Of those where someone answered, the most common response was that other offices around the country were going to be opened after this week’s Republican National Convention.
Compared to Hillary Clinton, Trump has spent almost nothing on pro-Trump advertisements around the country. When combined with super PACs, the Clinton campaign has spent around $57 million. Trump has spent just $3.6 million .
Trump’s campaign manager Paul Manafort was confident that their team would be able to raise the necessary money. “We really started raising money in June,” he said. “Trump is on fire on the campaign trail. …He’s doing rallies, he’s doing town halls, he’s doing local media, he’s doing prepared speeches.” Manafort said the campaign was able to raise $51 million last month.
During the primaries, Trump was able to knock out his Republican adversaries by relying on media coverage and free press; spending on advertisements was limited. But in the general election, money and a coordinated ground campaign are almost certainly going to be needed if Trump — and the Republicans — want to defeat Clinton.
