President Donald Trump has officially called for the resignation of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar after her absurdly anti-Semitic tweets about “hook-nosed” Jews.
Trump made the comments against Omar during a cabinet meeting at the White House on Tuesday.
“Anti-Semitism has no place in the United States Congress,” Trump said bluntly.

Democrats don’t seem to think so because House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer has already indicated that Omar, a freshman from Minnesota, won’t be losing her place on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, according to Roll Call.
That’s where Trump and Democrats disagree.

“And I think she should either resign from Congress or she should certainly resign from the House Foreign Affairs Committee,” Trump said.

Omar is one of two Muslim women elected to Congress in November; Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, also a Democrat, was the other.
Omar’s comments were made on Twitter on Sunday.
Her tweets specifically attacked Israel, claiming Republican lawmakers support the Jewish state because of campaign donations.
Omar tweeted “It’s all about the Benjamins, baby,” a reference to $100 bills, in response to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s support of Israel.

Omar also retweeted — then deleted — a Twitter post criticizing her that said she might as well be calling Jews “hook-nosed.”

After receiving backlash, the Muslim congresswoman offered an inadequate apology.

“I am grateful for Jewish allies and colleagues who are educating me on the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes,” Omar claimed.
Just a few short sentences later, Omar reiterated the comments that brought her criticism to begin with.
“At the same time, I reaffirm the problematic role of lobbyists in our politics, whether it be AIPAC, the NRA or the fossil fuel industry,” Omar said.

On Tuesday, Trump slammed Omar’s apology as “lame” and said the anti-Semitic comments were “deep-seated in her heart.”
“She didn’t mean a word of it,” Trump said of the apology. “It was just not appropriate.”
Such a poor apology wouldn’t cut it if a Republican had pushed stereotypes about Muslims.

“I think she should resign from Congress, frankly,” Trump said.
American presidents don’t call for congressmen to resign lightly, and it’s a rare enough occasion when it happens.
But in Omar’s case, she was just sworn in to her first term, and it’s already overdue.
