UFC president: CM Punk 'should call it a wrap' after latest loss

Share

Phil “CM Punk” Brooks’ second UFC fight didn’t go as poorly as his first, but he was still defeated in embarrassing fashion in front of his hometown crowd.

After not even making it out of the first round in his first UFC fight, the former professional wrestler managed to go the distance at UFC 225 on Saturday but lost to Mike Jackson via unanimous decision.

Brooks showed an inability to defend himself from Jackson’s blows, as well as an inability to generate any offense of his own. Jackson won all three rounds and Brooks looked like his punching bag for most of the fight.

Before the fight, Brooks had vowed to continue his MMA career regardless of the result, but UFC President Dana White had other ideas afterward.

“It probably should be a wrap,” White said of Punk’s MMA career. “The guy is 39 years old. I love the guy. He’s the nicest guy in the world. We gave him two shots, and he had a lot of heart tonight in this fight. And I think he should call it a wrap.”

Brooks signed with UFC in 2014 after a long WWE career. He trained at Roufusport MMA Academy in Milwaukee for nearly two years before his UFC debut in September 2016.

After losing that first fight to Mickey Gall via submission, Brooks had over a year-and-a-half to gear up for this second bout. He showed some improvement, in that he was able to last more than three minutes, but likely not enough to warrant a third opportunity, according to White.

White isn’t the only one who thinks Brooks should call it a career in the octagon. His opponent, Jackson, also didn’t hold back in offering advice to Brooks.

Should CM Punk call it a career in the octagon?

“Stop,” Jackson shouted when asked what advice he would offer Brooks. “I sent him to the hospital, and I’m not top-tier level. I know what it is with me and my skills. Can I compete with some guys in the UFC? Of course I can. But as far as him trying to continue with the sport, I highly advise against it — just for his safety.”

Brooks didn’t directly address his MMA future after the fight, but he did tweet out satisfaction that he emerged from the bout alive.

The 1-1 reference is related to the victory he achieved earlier in the week when he was found not liable in a civil suit filed by a WWE doctor.

The physician had accused Brooks of defamation after Brooks alleged medical malpractice while he performed in WWE.
