Viral 'Beach' Photo Baffling Internet Is Really an Optical Illusion That Only Some Can See

Share

An optical illusion challenging viewers to try and find both a beach scene and a busted car door has internet users going a little mad.

You may recall the “Laurel or Yanny” craze of 2018, in which listeners were fiercely divided over the pronunciation of a brief recording online.

Or perhaps you remember the infamous “dress” — was it white and gold, or blue and black?

An image posted by Muhammad Nayem may not be quite as controversial as the dress our dear friend Yanny, but many viewers are perplexed by the photo.

On July 2, Nayem posted the following image which many people immediately saw as a scene from the beach.

“If you can see a beach, ocean sky, rocks and stars then you are an artist,” Nayem wrote.

To many viewers, the image certainly does resemble a sandy beach with rolling waves set against a night sky.

Twitter user @imnitin222 definitely saw the beach, as evidenced by the image posted on July 8:

“I see a beautiful scene there,” the Twitter user wrote.

But this image is no day at the beach, according to Nayem, who added, “it’s not a painting its lower part of the car gate which needs to be repaired.”

For those unable to see the car door, Nayem gave some extra information to try and ease the frustration.

Are you able to spot the car door?

“Focus on dark side you will see car gate … It’s a car door, the seal panel under it is damaged, the bend in the door gives illusion of beach, the seal panel is damaged and scratched which gives illusion of water on the edge of beach.”

And for those who still found it challenging to see anything but a beach, Twitter user Aniruddha Hazra came to the rescue more than one week after the original posting with a drawing of what the entire vehicle may look like if the photo were zoomed out.

Left-brained viewers are indebted to Hazra’s fine artistic work.

What was your gut reaction when you first glimpsed this photo?
