With Donald Trump now holding a 280-delegate lead over him, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich statistically eliminated from securing enough delegates to win the Republican nomination, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz wants to slow Trump’s momentum. He hopes to do that with a one-on-one debate.
During an interview on Fox News with Bill O’Reilly, Cruz referred to Trump’s foreign policy is weak and isolationist. O’Reilly noted his own disagreement on foreign policy with Trump.
Cruz had a suggestion for O’Reilly.

“You know what? I’ve got an idea. Why don’t you ask Donald Trump to come here and defend himself,” Cruz said. “Donald is afraid to debate, Bill, you can moderate. He wouldn’t argue that you’re an unfair moderator.”
“It’d be terrific,” Cruz quipped.

O’Reilly disagreed that Trump would view him as a fair moderator. However,he insisted that his Fox News program would follow up on the idea.
“We’re gonna work that. We’re gonna work it,” he said. He later ended on a similar note, “But I will follow up on that debate offer and I appreciate you making it.”

This isn’t the first time Cruz has called for a one-on-one debate with Trump. When Trump skipped the GOP debate in January, Cruz called for a one-on-one debate.
Trump pulled out of a March 21 GOP debate in Salt Lake City, saying there had been enough debates between the candidates. Cruz and Kasich also declined to participate, and the event was cancelled.
