A Michigan man convicted of involuntary manslaughter in July for the beating death of a 3-year-old girl was in a Detroit courtroom to hear a victim impact statement from the dead toddler’s father. That’s when the courtroom erupted into a brief scene of chaos and confusion late last week, as the father — who was walking toward the witness stand — sucker-punched the convicted killer, Clifford Thomas, one of two people found guilty in the death of Jamila Smith.
The girl’s mother, Jasmine Gordon — the other person convicted of killing the young girl — was also in the Wayne County Circuit Court and began screaming when the man with whom she had the child suddenly hit Clifford Thomas in the back of the head.
The Detroit Free Press reported that “Gordon’s daughter…died of multiple blunt force injuries in September 2014, and her death was ruled a homicide, according to a spokesman with the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.”

Despite his violent outburst, the dead girl’s father, Dwayne Smith, was not charged in the abrupt attack, nor was he held in contempt of court by the judge. After order was returned to the courtroom, both of the convicted killers were sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
