Watch: MLB pitcher performs incredible national anthem before his own game

Pirates pitcher Steven Brault is best known for his arm, but before Pittsburgh’s game Tuesday against the Brewers he also showed off his pipes.

Brault sang the national anthem at PNC Park — and sounded really good.

“It’s something specifically my grandma always wanted me to do,” Brault told MLB.com. “She wanted me to sing the national anthem before a Major League game that I got to play in, so that’s part of it.”

While it’s the first time he’s sung “The Star-Spangled Banner” in the majors, Brault, 26, had done it before in the minors.

He’s been singing his whole life. As a child, Brault participated in theater and choir programs, and in high school he performed in musicals.

In college at Regis University in Denver, Colorado, he majored in vocal performance.

Brault said via Reuters that singing the anthem is also important for “showing people, showing kids, that it’s OK to do other things. I think that’s really important. It’s something I really live by.”

Brault is also the lead singer in a rock band called the Street Gypsies.

He received praise for his performance from teammates and opposing players and from viewers on social media.

“I think it went pretty well,” Brault told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “I was a little more nervous than I thought I would be leading into it. I was fine — and then when I started singing, I was like ‘Oh, this is pretty cool.'”

Brault didn’t pitch in the game, which the Pirates lost 3-2, but he’s had a pretty good year on the mound, going 5-1 with a 4.38 ERA.
