Watch the ridiculous shot that ruined UNC's senior night

Share

As Dick Vitale would say, “Are you kidding me?”

The final few seconds of the ACC battle between the University of North Carolina are about as good as college basketball gets.

Miami’s Ja ‘Quan Newton threw up a prayer from a step or two past half court at the buzzer to give the Hurricanes an 88-85 win.

Just seconds before, the Tar Heels Joel Berry had drained a three-pointer from the top of the key with four seconds left to tie the game at 88.

After the Berry three to tie it, Newton took the in-bounds pass with 4.1 seconds left, dribbled across half court and let it fly — splash.

It ruined Senior Night for the ninth-ranked Tar Heels, who honored seniors Berry, Theo Pinson and Aaron Rohlman in their last regular season home game.

It was a huge win for Miami, which improved to 21-8 and 10-7 in the ACC. Considered a bubble team for NCAA tournament inclusion going in, this win certainly helped Miami’s chances of getting invited to the dance.

Were you surprised to see Miami pull this one out?

For Berry, the sequence was all too familiar. It was reminiscent of the NCAA Championship game in 2016, where UNC lost to Villanova on a Kris Jenkins buzzer beater after UNC’s Marcus Paige tied it on a three with 4.7 seconds left.

“For some reason people love to hit game-winners like that on us,” Berry said after the game, the Raleigh News and Observer reported.

Berry led all scorers with 31 points for the Tar Heels, who fell to 21-8.

Newton scored the final nine points for Miami and finished with 15.

“I always watch it on TV when somebody does it, and for me to actually do it in this moment out there against North Carolina is something I will remember forever,” Newton told the Miami Herald.

“Senior Night is always really big for me,” UNC coach Roy Williams said. “I want them to have a win on their last game on this floor.”
