Steve Harvey caused an uproar on Sunday night as a result of a major gaff at the Miss Universe Pageant in Las Vegas, Nev. The ten semi-finalists had been announced, and the voting had concluded. Harvey, who was serving as the emcee for the event, was tasked with announcing the winner.
The task seemed simple enough but Harvey goofed. He read the runner-up as the winner and the winner as the runner-up. The mistake lead to confusion and outrage not just from the contestants, but also from the audience.
To make matters worse, the contestant from Colombia, who thought she had won, had already received her crown, her flowers, and walked down the runway, waving to the crowd. Harvey, not yet realizing what had happened, allowed the scene to unfold. After realizing his mistake, he called the contestants and the crowd to order.

Harvey was apologetic, to say the least. “Uh, there’s … I have to apologize.” The crowd began to scream in apparent horror. Harvey continued amid the screams, “The first runner-up is Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Miss Philippines!,” Harvey announced. Seemingly not knowing whether to be excited or prepared for a cruel joke, Miss Philippines took her place alongside the still crown-wearing Columbia. Harvey continued his profuse apologies:
Listen folks, let me just take control, please. This is exactly what is on the card. I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card. Horrible mistake. But the right thing. I can show it to you right here. The first runner-up is Columbia. It is my mistake. Still a great night. Please don’t hold it against the ladies. Please don’t. We feel so badly but it’s still a great night. Thank you all.
With those apologetic comments from Harvey, the crown was removed from the head of Miss Colombia 2014 and was placed on the Miss Universe winner, Miss Philippines.
