Watch: Top Braves prospect goes down after leg bends in horrific fashion

Share

Promising Braves rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. suffered a scary injury Sunday while trying to leg out an infield single against the Red Sox.

In the top of the seventh inning, Acuna beat out a slow roller to short, but after crossing first base his left leg jammed and his knee bent inward in an unnatural manner.

Acuna immediately tumbled to the ground and was writhing in pain.

The crowd gasped in horror when they replayed the incident on the video board at Fenway.

Amazingly, given how it looked, Acuna was able to walk off the field under his own power.

Acuna was taken to a Boston hospital, but the severity of the injury wasn’t known after the game, Braves manager Brian Snitker said via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The team announced that he had knee and back pain, but there were no further details.

Do you think the Braves are a legitimate World Series contender?

“I haven’t really got any reports other than he’s real sore,” Snitker said, according to the AJC. “He’s being looked at, so we’ll know more [later].”

The Braves went on to win 7-1.

“Bless him, it’s not something you like to see, especially on a routine ground ball to short that he beats out with that hustle and then goes down,” said Braves pitcher Mike Foltynewicz after the game.

“We’re praying for him. It was amazing to see him walk off like that. We were all shocked to see that. But hopefully we get him back healthy,” Foltynewicz added.

Acuna, a 20-year-old left fielder, has shown promise in his rookie season.

In 117 at-bats through 29 games, Acuna has hit five home runs and 13 RBIs and is batting .265. He hit his fifth home run Saturday against the Red Sox in an 8-6 loss.
