Watch: Top draft pick subtly gives glory to God as he walks on stage

Share

As the NFL draft continues to become more and more of a spectacle, it’s starting to resemble a Hollywood award show as much as an amateur selection draft.

There’s pomp and pageantry. There’s a red carpet. It’s on primetime television. And there are people who approach a podium after having their names called.

During that walk to the podium, the NFL allows some of its first-round prospects to choose a song to play.

Most players pick their favorite song. Some select songs that hold special meaning to them.

When the Miami Dolphins selected Minkah Fitzpatrick with the 11th overall pick, the young safety from Alabama came out to a song that could’ve been his favorite and certainly has some meaning to him, but also gives glory to God.

Fitzpatrick opted to use “I’m Good” by Trip Lee., and the song’s appreciation for God are abundantly clear.

“Yes sir, may not win Grammy or get another stellar, but I get rewards from my Lord, there ain’t nothing better,” Lee sings.

“I may not jot again. I may not sell a milli. But I’ve been purchased by my king, He’s forever with me. So what they talking bout, no they can’t knock my down. Yes sir, I do feel pain, but Jesus got me now.”

Perhaps Fitzpatrick most relates to one particular line.

“But my passion for Jesus they ain’t never go’n stop me.”

Fitzpatrick’s strong faith is one of his most admirable characteristics, and it’s one that he’s never shied away from, as those close to him can attest.

“We met Minkah through our son, Daniel, who is one of his friends at the University of Alabama,” Leslie Ashford told First Baptist Jackson about Fitzpatrick. “They met through a Bible study group called Press College Ministry. Minkah goes to church in Tuscaloosa and has maintained a strong Christian witness throughout his college career. He’s from New Jersey and doesn’t get to go home much, so he comes home with Daniel some and they’ve become good friends. Minkah is the kind of friend and kid you want your child to make in college.”

Fitzpatrick routinely references his faith in his social media posts.

Fitzpatrick also has several tattoos referencing his faith. A tattoo on his left wrist reads “Take up your cross and follow me,” from Matthew 16:24. On his fingers, he has the names of his siblings tattooed, but in Hebrew script.

He might never win a Super Bowl with the Dolphins, but Fitzpatrick is very clearly winning at life.
