7-Year-Old Cowboys Fan Gives Reality Check to Jerry Jones - 'We Suck'

Share

Finding out that a 7-year-old could do your job is one of the most professionally demoralizing things a person can go through.

But let’s face it, sportswriters, we just got dunked on by a second-grader in Mansfield, Texas, on Tuesday.

Fox News reported that 7-year-old Rylan Wood went to bed before the end of the “Monday Night Football” matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans at AT&T Stadium, his mom Kayla Jimenez reminding him that it was a school night.

But before being spared the PG-13-rated disgrace that was the home team’s 28-14 surrender at the hands of the visitors from Nashville, bringing its record to 3-5, Wood told his mom, “If the Cowboys lose, I really want to write a letter.”

The letter, intended for team owner Jerry Jones, belongs in this year’s compilation of The Best American Sportswriting.

“Dear Mr. Jones,

“My name is Rylan Wood. I am a 7 year old 2nd grade student in Mansfield, Texas. My family has been Dallas Cowboys fans since the team was started. I have a lot of Cowboy gear and I have met Zeke (Ezekiel Elliott), Taco (Charlton), Jason Witten, and two other players who play for other teams.

“You have made my mom very mad because WE SUCK! Every game day she is yelling at the tv and turns off the game. We are wanting to believe in the boys but it is hard. I hope ‘Coach Garrett’ is clapping if this letter gets to you. See what happens when Dez X (Bryant) is gone?? The cheerleaders are better (than) the team this year. I do not want to hurt your feelings.

“Thank you, Rylan.”

Jimenez first posted the letter to Facebook so that it could not be ignored before putting a stamp on it and sending it to Jones.

In the wake of the loss that spawned Rylan’s letter, Jones spoke in terms any second-grader is more than familiar with when he said his team “is in trouble.”

“We’re not in anything if we don’t play better,” Jones told reporters. “What I recognize is not so much the three wins and five losses but the way we lost this game and the way we played in the game.

Will the Cowboys make the playoffs this season?

“We’ve got to play better. Our record could be better than it is right now, and we’d still be in trouble.”

The Cowboys are hoping to make a late playoff run (it’s not out of the question in the woeful NFC East). If they fall short, “Coach Garrett” (love the kid’s use of scare quotes in the letter!) can expect to feel more heat from one 7-year-old fan.
