Bengals rookie QB arrested on DUI charge

Share

Move over, Johnny Manziel. While you’re off in Canada rebuilding your career, someone showed up and inherited your party-boy disappointment crown back in the States.

Logan Woodside, who was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round out of Toledo in April, got hauled in on a DUI charge in Bellevue, Kentucky, on June 9.

According to a report in the Cincinnati Enquirer, the 23-year-old Woodside got hauled in at 3:46 a.m.

The police report describes how a routine traffic stop for speeding quickly transformed into more than meets the eye.

“Officer was sitting in the outside area of UDF when a blue SUV came through the parking lot at a high rate of speed,” the report said. “When I walked up to the vehicle the driver had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage, and he had glassy eyes. Subject was able to exit the vehicle OK but had minor troubles counting backward, and with finger dexterity. During the HGN (horizontal gaze nystagmus) test subject should clues for impairment. Subject had trouble with his walk and turn, and counting during the test. Subject was unable to complete the one leg stand. Subject took the BA (blood alcohol) test after attempting to contact an attorney and declined a test at his own expense. Breath: .112.”

For perspective, a 0.112, well over the legal limit of .08, is roughly equivalent to how drunk the average person would become after chugging a six-pack of most standard mass-market beers in rapid succession.

Woodside also got nailed with a speeding ticket for going 10 miles over the limit, which is what got the officer’s attention in the first place.

He entered a plea of not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday and faces a second court date on July 10.

Since this is Woodside’s first alleged DUI offense, he faces relatively minor penalties; one or more of license suspension for 30 to 120 days, jail for two to 30 days, a fine of between $200 and $500, 90 days in mandatory alcohol abuse treatment, and/or 48 hours to 30 days of community labor. It is at the judge’s discretion which of these penalties is applied.

Woodside did help his case by avoiding the conditions for “aggravated DUI” in Kentucky, which carries greater penalties for those who blow above a 0.15, refuse the sobriety test or otherwise resist the officer, speed by more than 30 mph, drive in an aggressive or reckless manner, have a child in the car or injure or kill someone while behind the wheel.

Woodside, thankfully, did none of those things.

The Bengals, for their part, issued only a terse public statement and have not indicated if they will comment further as more details emerge.

Said a team spokesman, “We are aware of the incident involving Logan Woodside and are gathering more information.”

Woodside was at the team’s minicamp between Tuesday and Thursday despite the arrest and participated in drills as he tries to beat out Matt Barkley and Jeff Driskel for the job of holding the clipboard for starter Andy Dalton.

He was drafted 249th overall, just seven slots ahead of “Mr. Irrelevant,” Trey Quinn, who went to the Redskins with the 256th and final pick.
