Bubba Watson makes 'incredible gesture' with prize check after PGA tour win

Share

Bubba Watson made a spectacular comeback to win the Travelers Championship for the third time Sunday in Cromwell, Connecticut, but it paled in comparison with what he did after the tournament.

After the victory, Watson donated $200,000 of his winnings to the tournament’s primary charity, the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, located in Ashford, Connecticut.

The camp was established in 1988 by actor Paul Newman as a haven for kids who are seriously ill. Some 20,000 kids attend the camp every year.

“It is such an honor to be a part of this tournament. They’ve always made me feel like family,” Watson said, according to the Hartford Courant.

“Every year they’re making improvements, making the tournament better, growing the charitable donations, doing more for the families, caddies, fans. I can’t say enough about how impressive this tournament is and how much they impact the community by giving back,” he added.

Watson has donated to numerous charities over the years. His own “Drive to One Million” campaign has raised over $1.3 million for various causes.

In 2016, Watson donated $100,000 to the Bruce Edwards Foundation for ALS research. Edwards, the long-time caddie for Tom Watson, died in 2004 from ALS.

“All of us at The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp were thrilled to see Bubba win his third Travelers Championship, and we are over the moon delighted by this incredibly generous gift,” Hole in the Wall Gang Camp CEO Jimmy Canton said, reported the Courant. “Both Bubba and [wife] Angie are deeply committed to helping children in need, and we are so grateful for their friendship.”

Andy Bessette, the executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Travelers, also thanked Watson for the donation.

“Bubba is a tremendous person with a huge heart, and this unbelievable gesture is a demonstration of how much he cares about others,” Bessette told the Courant.

Watson is having a tremendous year on the tour, winning for the third time this season. Along with the Travelers, Watson won the Genesis Open in February and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship in March.

This is his third win at the Travelers; he also won in 2010 and 2015. Only Billy Casper, with four titles, has won it more times.
