Ex-NFL All-Pro Dies in Limo Crash

Share

Isiah Robertson, who was one of the stars for the Rams during their first stint in Los Angeles, died Thursday in a limousine crash at the age of 69.

Robertson was driving a limo that skidded on a rain-slicked curve in Mabank, Texas, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety, which said the vehicle was going at unsafe speeds considering the wet conditions.

The limo came to a stop partially off the road. It was then hit by a pickup truck and knocked into the oncoming lane, where it was hit by another car.

Robertson was taken to a hospital in Athens, Texas, where he died. No one else involved in the accident suffered major injuries.

Robertson played 12 years in the NFL with the first eight (1971-78) coming with the Rams. He then played the last four years of his career with the Buffalo Bills.

The Rams released a statement on Robertson praising his ability on the field and his service off of it.

A versatile linebacker who played on the outside in both a 4-3 and a 3-4 defense, Robertson made six Pro Bowls, was a two-time All-Pro and was the 1971 Defensive Rookie of the Year.

One of his teammates, Hall of Famer Jack Youngblood, remembered Robertson on Twitter.

Robertson was part of one of the most famous plays in NFL history, although it came in an Earl Campbell highlight.

In a game in 1978, Robertson attempted to tackle the Houston Oilers’ powerful running back, only for the then-rookie to lower his shoulder pads, headbutt Robertson in the chest and continue running for another 17 yards.

Campbell would later go on to say that he regretted the hit on Robertson and apologized when seeing him years after the play.

According to the Los Angeles Times, just hours before the accident Robertson was at Grand Prairie High School in Texas to give a speech at a banquet honoring the Grand Prairie football team.
