Heartbroken Julio Urias Advances Dodgers to World Series Night After Grandmother's Death
Julio Urias pitched with a heavy heart in Game 7 of the NL Championship Series, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers advance to the World Series.
Emotions were running high, but it wasn’t just any game to Urias.
It was the night after his grandmother died.
The pitcher was running on virtually no sleep and with a heavy heart. Yet he managed to maintain his composure and carry his Dodgers through to the World Series.
Enrique Hernandez shared the news with teammates and asked the Dodgers to toast Urias before popping champagne following a 5-1 win against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night.
The left-handed Urias got one of the biggest outs of the game in the fifth inning after relieving starter Walker Buehler.
With the Dodgers clinging to a 2-1 lead, Urias allowed a line drive to Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich that left fielder Chris Taylor caught on the warning track with a sliding effort.
He also pitched Friday in Game 6, making Saturday’s performance the first time in his career he pitched on consecutive days.
Kiké Hernandez issued a special toast to Urías and his grandmother during the team’s celebration after the game.
“Guys, we all know how hard it’s been for Julio. It’s been a long road to be here with us. Not only did he go back-to-back for the first time in his life, but for those who don’t know, I want to make a toast because his grandma passed last night. He came in today and got us the biggest out of the game.”

“I talked to my mom a little while ago and I told her that all this was thanks to my grandmother. She obviously was sad, but happy for the achievement,” Urias told Yahoo Sports.
Urias made his MLB debut as a teenager in 2016 but missed most of the next two seasons due to shoulder issues.
The 22-year-old returned this September and has been pitching out of the bullpen. He’s allowed a run in 3 1/3 innings this postseason.
The Dodgers will now take on the Red Sox in Boston for Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday night.
