Jim Kelly's wife gives emotional update on former quarterbacks latest round of treatment

Things are looking up for Buffalo Bills legend Jim Kelly as he continues his five-year battle with cancer.

Kelly underwent follow-up surgery Thursday, and his wife, Jill, shared a photo on Instagram in which she said that everything went well.

“Never stop holding hands. In sickness and in health. Out of surgery and in recovery. Still in a lot of pain, but everything went well. Thank GOD!” Kelly’s wife of 22 years wrote on Instagram.

Things apparently got even better afterward as The Buffalo News reported that Kelly was discharged from Mount Sinai West Hospital on Friday.

“Mr. Kelly left the hospital after this second stage procedure to help restore his dentition to the reconstructed upper jaw,” Dr. Mark Urken, head and neck surgeon at Mount Sinai West, said in a statement.

Kelly had five implants inserted into new bone in his upper jaw and will return for more surgery in September to have permanent dentures inserted.

That followed 12 hours of surgery in late March for reconstruction of his upper jaw and the removal of cancer from the right side of his jaw.

The Hall of Fame quarterback was originally diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and has made various trips to the hospital since then.

One of his daughters, Erin Kelly-Bean, posted a touching message to her dad on Father’s Day.

Even with everything that he’s been through and is currently going through, Jim Kelly plans on attending his long-running football camp, which begins Sunday in Orchard Park.

Kelly also plans on attending the ESPYs on July 18 as he will be honored with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.

“God willing, I’ll be there,” he said while at his charity’s annual golf tournament in early June.

“People talk about this ‘Kelly tough’ part,” Kelly said Monday. “Yeah, it is. But after a while, even when you’re strong like that, you sometimes look and wonder why all this continues to happen.

“And then, to be honest with you. I know why. I’ve been through a lot. Faith is my No. 1. I know why I’m still here. I know why I’m going through (it). It’s to be able to go and tell other people going through similar things never to give up.”
