Judge stuns courtroom with new rape charges in Winslow case, sets bail at $2 million

Share

Kellen Winslow Jr.’s prospects of being a free man just went from bad to worse.

The former NFL tight end already was facing charges that he kidnapped and raped two women in the San Diego area earlier this year and attempted to rape two others, but new charges were added Thursday.

Winslow is now also accused of raping an unconscious 17-year-old girl in 2003 when he was 19.

His bail has been set at $2 million, and in a country whose Bill of Rights, specifically the Eighth Amendment, forbids “excessive” bail, the mere fact that $2 million is not excessive speaks to just how heinous his alleged crimes are.

Winslow was arrested on June 14 and hit with a slew of charges that, if he’s convicted, add up to life in prison.

Specifically, he was charged with two counts of kidnapping with intent to commit rape, two counts of forcible rape, one count of forcible sodomy, one count of forcible oral copulation, two counts of residential burglary and one count of indecent exposure.

Will Kellen Winslow Jr. ever walk the streets a free man again after his trial?

The ages of the victims run the gamut; besides the 17-year-old girl in 2003, Winslow is accused of raping two women in their 50s and attempting to rape a 71-year-old and an 86-year-old at a mobile home park.

The charges involving the women age 54 and 59 are the classic hitchhiker’s story gone wrong.

In March, and then again in a separate incident in May, police say Winslow picked up a transient woman hitchhiking, drove her to an undisclosed location in the wilderness and raped her, threatening to kill her if she said a word to anyone about the incident.

He also stands accused of exposing himself to a 55-year-old woman in May.

Winslow pleaded not guilty to the earlier charges but hasn’t yet entered a plea in the 2003 incident.

The $2 million bail was actually something of a minor victory for Winslow; he had been held without bail since his arrest, the judge at the initial hearing deciding that Winslow was a “danger to the public” and using that label to justify Winslow’s indefinite imprisonment.

Winslow is the son of San Diego Chargers legend Kellen Winslow, a Hall of Famer who’s considered one of the best tight ends in NFL history.

The elder Winslow appeared at his son’s arraignment last month. He and Kellen Jr.’s wife, Janelle, issued a statement of support, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune:

“On behalf of our son and my husband, we want to reiterate our love, support and affection for him during this difficult process. We will always be there for him and we know the true facts will come out.”

When his trial gets underway, we’ll find out whether those facts will exonerate Kellen Winslow Jr. or doom him to a life behind bars.
