The New York Mets’ clock might read Tebow Time sooner than later.

Speculation about Tebow’s possible call-up gained momentum after Mets acting general manager John Ricco hinted at the possibility in an interview with the New York Daily News.

To be clear, Ricco noted that no official conversations had been had yet.

However, considering the aimless direction of the Mets season, there is little downside to a possible Tebow promotion.

“We haven’t really talked about that,” Ricco said. He did reveal that plans are in place for an official discussion with Mets special assistants J.P. Ricciardi and Omar Minaya.

“It’ll be something I talk with J.P. and Omar about and then we’ll see where it goes,” the GM said. “But right now, he’s continuing to develop.”

Tebow has developed at a solid pace, especially considering that he was literally plying his trade in a completely different sport less than three years ago. While nobody has ever questioned Tebow’s passion or work ethic, it was fair to wonder aloud if he could make it as a baseball player.

Thus far, Tebow has more than lived up to expectations. He is hitting a very respectable .269 with 12 doubles, five home runs and 33 RBIs with the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies this season.

Do you think Tim Tebow will be called up this season?

At this stage of his baseball career, Tebow’s major area of improvement would be to lower his still-too-high strikeout rate.

Tebow’s work ethic hasn’t gone unnoticed by Ricco either.

“You have to just give him credit for the effort level and the commitment and the results are coming with him,” the GM said.

Fueling the fire of a possible call-up to the Mets was when Ricco revealed that Tebow would not be getting a Triple-A promotion anytime soon, despite his improved mechanics and Eastern League All-Star berth.

Ricco did, however, address the elephant in the room regarding Tebow’s baseball pursuit — that he began a new sports career at the ripe sports age of 29 (when many athletes already start getting classified as being on the downside of their primes).

“The thing with him all along was going to be Father Time and whether he has a long enough window in order to make this happen, but he’s trending in the right direction,” Ricco said.

Despite Tebow’s truncated time frame, Ricco seemed confident about the direction Tebow was trending.

“Every month it seems he gets better and better and I know he made the All-Star team and I know that that’s exciting,” he said. “At Double-A, he’s more than holding his own. He had more hits last night and I think it’s a great story.”
