NCAA Football Player Arrested for Altercation over Tacos - Report

Share

More than two months after an alleged altercation on March 24, Texas A&M defensive back Derrick Tucker was arrested Thursday and charged with assault.

The incident stemmed from an early-morning disagreement about tacos in Northgate, a district in College Station, Texas, according to court records cited by The Battalion, Texas A&M’s student newspaper.

Tucker’s arrest report claimed he and another man had a “disagreement over tacos when they got into a mutual altercation,” ESPN reported.

Tucker allegedly left the scene following the disagreement, before returning while the other man was waiting for an Uber.

“Tucker allegedly came from behind, struck him in the back of the head and knocked him to the ground,” according to The Dallas Morning News, which cited a court document.

When the alleged victim reported the incident to police later on in the day, he reportedly still had a welt the size of a quarter on the back of his head.

After Texas A&M Police took Tucker into custody Thursday, he was charged “with assault causing bodily injury,” ESPN noted.

Tucker soon posted $5,000 bond, and was released on the same day.

Do you think Texas A&M will be competitive in the SEC this season?

Texas A&M told the Houston Chronicle that the school will look into the situation.

Tucker, meanwhile, is entering his third season with the Aggies after being a four-star recruit out of Manvel, Texas, in the class of 2017.

He started eight games in 2018 and had seven starts in 2017.

His best game came as a freshman, when he was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week after racking up 14 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception against Ole Miss.

Tucker would have seemingly been a favorite to replace Donovan Wilson at safety after Wilson was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in April’s NFL draft.

Now, Tucker’s status going forward is unclear, especially since the defensive secondary was a big part of head coach Jimbo Fisher’s 2019 recruiting class, which was ranked fourth in the country by 247 Sports.

The Aggies signed four four-star defensive backs: safeties Brian Williams and Demani Richardson, as well as cornerbacks Erick Young and Elijah Blades.

All four recruits are ranked among the top 10 players at their respective positions for their class.

That meant Tucker was going to have his work cut out for him even before his arrest.

The Aggies football squad is currently on a summer break, and will regroup as a team in late July as they gear up for the 117th season in program history.

Texas A&M will open its season against Texas State on Aug. 29 before taking on the defending national champion Clemson Tigers on Sept. 7.
