Patriots roasted after trying to steal the Laurel-Yanny craze

Share

If you’ve spent any time on the internet in the last week or so, you’ve inevitably heard or seen people bickering over whether it’s “Laurel” or “Yanny.”

Just in case you’re unaware, it’s become one of first viral crazes of 2018.

An audio clip has been making the rounds with a male voice saying either “Laurel” or “Yanny” twice.

It seems to have genuinely torn the internet apart, with large swathes of people hearing “Yanny” and nearly as many hearing “Laurel.”

The entire viral poll has thus far been 2018’s version of “The Dress,” which became such a topic du jour back in 2015 that it somehow ended up with its own Wikipedia page.

Unsurprisingly, some sports teams tried to get in on the pop culture craze.

One team that did not handle the craze very well was the New England Patriots.

In a somewhat lazy attempt to cash in on something with current cultural heft, the Patriots posited their own version of the “Yanny-Laurel” question.

Now, Tom Brady could very well be the greatest of all time (GOAT) and it’s a topic of conversation that most football fans love to engage in.

But presenting it the way they did? The Patriots Twitter staff was begging to be roasted. And the internet happily obliged.

Some wanted to drudge up the only quarterback to ever beat Brady twice in the Super Bowl.

Others wanted to reminisce about Brady’s botched trick play in Super Bowl LII, where he was unable to catch a football.

Did the Patriots make a mistake by trying to capitalize on a pop culture craze?

Some resorted to the old “Patriots are cheaters” trope.

And of course, there were the reminders of Brady’s latest Super Bowl loss.

Not every comment was an affront against the Patriots. Some wholeheartedly agreed about Brady being the best ever.

However, even those tweets were met with a swift response.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, they have been absorbing quite a few losses lately.

There’s the 41-33 Super Bowl LII loss. There’s the loss of key free agents like Dion Lewis and Malcolm Butler. Even Brady suffered a loss recently when his starting guard Joe Thuney went down with a foot injury.

And now, the Patriots’ attempt to capitalize on an internet craze can also be chalked up as a loss.
