Red Sox Star Makes Secret Late-Night Gesture to Homeless After World Series Win

Share

Mookie Betts was one of the stars of the Boston Red Sox’s Game 2 victory in the World Series on Wednesday as his three hits matched the total of the entire Los Angeles Dodgers lineup.

But what Betts did after the game was even more impressive even though it didn’t take place in front of the 15 million or so viewers who tuned into Game 2.

Hours after Boston’s 4-2 victory, Betts delivered hot meals to the homeless outside of the Boston Public Library, where temperatures had dipped into the 30s.

Betts did it without fanfare and without cameras, but Boston radio host Lou Merloni was able to obtain a photo of the aftermath.

Mike Winter, a local nightclub host, told WEEI-FM that around 1:45 a.m. he was coming out of a club and noticed two men in hoodies distributing about 10 trays of food to the line of homeless people.

“I didn’t know who they were at first. They had hoodies on,” Winter said. “Next thing I know they are laying out trays of food.”

It was Betts and his cousin.

“Then they’re walking around all of Boston library where there are tons of homeless and telling people there is food around the corner,” Winter continued. “I walked up and I said, ‘Hello,’ because we have a mutual friend and then all the people from the club came out and he just walked away. No pictures. No nothing. None of the homeless even knew who he was, but they were just grateful for what he was doing.”

Will the Red Sox sweep the Dodgers in the World Series?

Nearly as amazing as Betts’ gesture, Winter said, is the fact that he didn’t do it for publicity but for the kindness of his heart.

“Nowadays people do stuff because they want recognition,” he said. “He didn’t even want recognition. He wasn’t being followed by cameras like people do on Instagram. This is just him being himself.”

This isn’t the first time that Betts has handed out food to the homeless; he also did it back in 2015 and mentioned it in a postgame interview.

”Me and Blake (Swihart), ordered pizza last night and we had almost a whole pizza left,” Betts said. “He said, ‘Mook, go give it to a guy you see on the street and you’ll hit two home runs.’ We ended up doing that and I ended up hitting two home runs. So, I guess giving pizza to homeless people is good luck.”

In addition to Betts’ gesture after Game 2 and giving the pizza away in 2015, he had another moment in which he gifted someone food — in Game 1 of the World Series.

Taco Bell has a promotion where if a player steals a base during the series, the whole country gets a free taco.

Betts did just that in Game 1 by swiping second base, and he mentioned his motivation was to get in scoring position and get a free taco.

“It was just one of those things where we said be aggressive early,” Betts said of stealing second base off Clayton Kershaw. “You know, try and get a run across and on top of that I just wanted some tacos.”
