Rich Get Richer: Alabama Flips 5-Star and 4-Star Recruits from Other Schools

Share

The Alabama Crimson Tide may have come up short in the Heisman race, but they still got some good news on Saturday that will no doubt better position them for the future.

Two of the country’s top defensive back recruits flipped their commitments and have verbally agreed to join the Crimson Tide.

Five-star prospect Daxton Hill had originally committed to Michigan, but he announced on Twitter he was decommitting from the Wolverines in favor of Alabama.

Hill, who committed to Michigan in September, is the highest-ranked safety and eighth-best overall prospect for the class of 2019, according to 247Sports.

An added bonus for Alabama is that Hill is from Booker T. Washington High School in Oklahoma. So, while quarterback Kyler Murray of Oklahoma University won the Heisman over Crimson Tide signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa, Hill chose the Tide over OU, Michigan and every other school.

As if that weren’t enough, Alabama got another late commit just hours later, when cornerback Jeffery Carter flipped from Texas A&M.

Carter, a four-star prospect, is ranked as the third-best cornerback in the class of 2019, according to 247Sports. He also made his announcement via Twitter.

Is Alabama already the favorite to win next year's national championship?

Hill and Carter are both verbal commits at the moment, meaning they’re within their rights to switch yet again. The early signing period for college football will last from Dec. 19 through Dec. 21. National Signing Day is Feb. 6.

Alabama has the top-ranked recruiting class for 2019, according to both ESPN and 247Sports. This includes Taulia Tagovailoa, Tua’s younger brother and a four-star quarterback in his own right.

This is Bama’s third No. 1 class in the past four seasons when going by 247Sports’ rankings. Furthermore, Alabama already has the lead for the Class of 2020, with 11 hard commits.

While pro sports have parity in regard to their draft processes, the college sports system allows the rich to get richer.

The teams that land the best prospects aren’t the teams with the worst records, like in the pros. There is a clear separation between the haves and the have-nots in college sports, which allows programs like Alabama to remain contenders year after year.

None of other three teams in the College Football Playoffs stack up to Alabama’s top class, though they all rank in the top 10 for the class of 2019.

Clemson has the No. 5 class, Oklahoma checks in at No. 8 and Notre Dame has the No. 10 class.
