Sir Charles Barkley just got paid! Alabama QB Jalen Hurts loses bet

Share

Charles Barkley may have won the bet, but Jalen Hurts won the war.

Thursday, the University of Alabama quarterback wore what no Crimson Tide fan ever wants to see him wear again — a football jersey for the arch-rival Auburn Tigers.

Hurts was simply paying up a bet to Hall of Famer and Auburn alum Charles Barkley.

Two weeks prior to last season’s Iron Bowl rivalry game between Auburn and Alabama, Barkley and Hurts made a gentlemen’s wager — if Alabama won, Barkley would have to don an Crimson Tide jersey for a day. If Auburn won, Hurts would have to be clad in Tiger blue.

Barkley made the wager public on TNT’s “Inside the NBA.”

“Jalen Hurts challenged me to a bet, and I ain’t forgot it, Jalen,” Barkley said. “I’m either going to wear an Alabama jersey on TV, or he’s going to have to wear [an Auburn jersey] on campus. … I’ve got the jersey coming.

“My Tigers need to win because I don’t want to wear that crap on TNT.”

Barkley’s Tigers did end up winning, 26-14. It was Alabama’s first — and only — loss of the season.

Thursday, Hurts decided it was time to pay up.

But not before getting in the last laugh.

“What’s up, Charles,” Hurts said in a video on Twitter posted by the school. “Obviously, I’m a man of my word. And first off, I’d just like to congratulate Auburn and the Auburn family on their successful season this year. But I think it’s time I get to class. I’m running kind of late for English.”

Hurts then picked up an Alabama gym bag holding the national championship trophy Alabama won in January’s College Football Playoff title game.

The quarterback flashed a wry smile and said, “Roll Tide,” and walked away from the camera.

Thursday on TNT’s “Inside the NBA,” the video of Hurts wearing the Auburn jersey and carrying the trophy was played for Barkley.

All Sir Charles could do was laugh and tell Hurts, “Well played. Well played.”
