Tebow makes history in minors with incredible feat, inches closer to MLB call-up

Share

Tim Tebow is having a breakout season playing for the New York Mets’ Double-A affiliate, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

In just his second season in professional baseball, Tebow, 30, has already accomplished a major milestone.

On Friday, he was named to the Eastern League All-Star team.

In 68 games this season, Tebow is hitting .256 with five home runs and 30 RBIs with an OPS of .720.

But that accounts for a slow start. If you look at the last 22 games, Tebow has been on fire, batting .318, and over the last 10 games he’s hitting .406.

Tebow’s 30 RBIs currently lead the team. (Two other players have more home runs, but they have been called up to Triple-A Las Vegas.)

His five home runs are currently third on the team.

Do you think Tebow will be called up to majors?

Joining him as an Eastern League All-Star is the New Hampshire Fisher Cats’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr., son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero.

The All-Star game will be played July 11 in Trenton, New Jersey.

“He’s made some big strides and once again, you have to heap praise on his work ethic,” Binghamton manager Luis Rojas said of Tebow on Friday, according to the Binghamton Press and Sun Bulletin. “He’s put some work in to get the point where he is.”

“It’s a great honor and it means a lot, but for me it’s just the next day. We’re getting ready to go into the cage and go to work. It’s no different than any other day,” Tebow told SportsNet New York.

“I’ve got to continue the process and I’m not where I want to be. I feel like I’m getting closer and taking steps there, but I’ve got a long way to go,” he added.

The ultimate goal is to play for the New York Mets, which is looking like it could be a reality, possibly this season.

With the Mets (32-47) likely out of playoff contention, there’s a possibility Tebow could be a September call-up, especially if he keeps hitting like he is. It’s probably a long shot at this point, but Tebow has been overcoming the odds throughout his baseball career, so anything is possible.
