Tim Tebow officially on DL, needs to see specialist

Share

It’s been a tale of two extremes for Tim Tebow this month. Just days after making his first All-Star game appearance in the minor leagues, the Mets outfielder was placed on the disabled list with a hand injury.

Tebow was injured during Thursday’s game between the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and the Trenton Thunder. He left the game in the seventh inning after a swing due to right hand/wrist discomfort.

On Saturday the Rumble Ponies announced that Tebow was placed on the disabled list and he will see a hand specialist on Monday.

Rumble Ponies manager Luis Rojas told WBNG-TV in Binghamton, New York that he didn’t want to speculate about the injury.

“He’s one of our able players, but he’s not able to swing,” said Rojas. “We’re really tentative to use him in any other area. The organization and our medical trainer required him to go to New York as soon as possible. We have to find out what the discomfort is. We just have to make sure that it’s nothing major.”

Rojas initially expected Tebow to rejoin the team on Tuesday but that was before he was placed on the 7-day disabled list and required a second opinion from the specialist.

“That was the original plan,” said Rojas. “Right now, after I got the call from the guys that are coming, we still have to wait for Monday to see what the hand specialist is going to say about [Tebow] when they take a look at his right hand. That will dictate what the plan is for Tim. He’s on the 7-day DL right now.”

This is the same right hand that Tebow injured in college which forced him to wear a hard cast that can be seen when he won the Heisman in 2007.

Will Tim Tebow make his MLB debut this season?

Tebow was having the best month of his baseball career as he was hitting .340 with a .798 OPS in July. For the season, Tebow’s average sits at .273 with six home runs.

This injury could impact the chances of Tebow getting called up to the majors this season. The Mets are floundering and a spark like Tebow could have been just what the fans wanted to see in September.

Prior to the game where he was injured, Tebow said he wasn’t thinking about a potential call-up.

“I can’t worry about any of that. I have to stay focused on the process and not the maybes, not the hypothetical, not the what-ifs,” Tebow said. “I don’t think that’s a place that an athlete can live.”

This injury is just the latest for the Mets organization which has seen its biggest stars placed on the disabled list.

Yoenis Cespedes has dealt with heel injuries and a quad injury all season as the Mets outfielder just returned to the lineup on Friday after missing over two months.

Noah Syndergaard also missed nearly two months of action with a finger injury while Jay Bruce (hip) and Todd Frazier (ribs) are both currently on the 10-day DL.
