Tom Brady appears to hint at retirement age in Instagram post

Share

With the American sports world in a relative lull at the moment, with only midseason baseball and a United States-less World Cup going on, two obnoxiously speculative stories have been making their rounds in the media.

First, the interminable speculations, rumors and hearsay regarding LeBron James’ potential free agency moves have been seeping into every corner of the sports world. It’s certainly tiresome to hear the nearly universally unsubstantiated claims regarding where James will play next year.

But at least James’ decision on his future will take on some shape or form by Independence Day.

The other sports story making its way around might not take shape for years.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, a five-time Super Bowl champion, will go down in history as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. He might also go down as one of the best athletes in any sport in terms of longevity, considering he turned in an MVP season and a record-breaking Super Bowl performance (which he lost) at the ripe sports age of 40.

That being said, the latest round of “When Will Tom Brady Actually Retire?” is starting to wear a little thin.

Brady has been frustratingly coy with his retirement, and that only continued after ESPN made an Instagram post regarding him.

Brady, whose interview with Oprah Winfrey aired on Sunday, responded to the post via his official Instagram account, and seemingly suggested when he would be retiring.

“Cuarenta y cinco” is Spanish for “45.”

Do you wish Tom Brady would retire right now?

Seeing as how Brady probably wasn’t referring to President Donald Trump, it’s safe to say that he was suggesting that he would be retiring at 45. He accompanied the response with emojis of the “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” monkeys.

Of note, Brady has long suggested that 45 might be his ideal sports expiration date.

“I always said my mid-40s, and naturally that means around 45. If I get there and I still feel like I do today, I don’t see why I wouldn’t want to continue,” Brady told ESPN in May 2017.

Despite wanting to play until age 45, which has never been done effectively in NFL history, Brady admitted in the Oprah interview that his family would play a big role in his NFL future. Brady is married to supermodel Gisele Bundchen and has two children with her. He also has a third child from a previous marriage.

Brady turns 41 in August, so he would effectively be playing four more seasons should he stick to his plan to retire at 45.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, Brady’s indecisiveness already has cost them. Despite the small sample size, Jimmy Garoppolo is looking like a bona fide star and was dealt away from the Patriots (in what is increasingly looking like a lopsided deal in favor of the San Francisco 49ers) because Brady couldn’t commit to the future one way or another.
