US men's hockey team wins 13-1, most lopsided win at world championships in 56 years
Competing in the International Ice Hockey Federation’s World Men’s Championship, Team USA absolutely destroyed South Korea on Friday.
Team USA rolled to a 13-1 victory, its largest margin of victory at the world championships since 1962, when they beat Norway 14-2, NBC Sports reported.
They also beat Switzerland that year 12-1, according to USA Hockey.
The men’s team is now 5-0 at this year’s world championships, which are being played in Denmark. It’s the first time since 1933 that Team USA has started the tournament 5-0.
The U.S. sits atop Group B with its undefeated record, while Canada and Finland are not far behind, with records of at 3-1. Korea is at the bottom of the group at 0-5.
Team USA notched a huge 5-4 victory over Canada in its first game of the tournament on May 4.
In Group A, Sweden leads the way at 5-0, while the Czech Republic is 4-1 and Russia is 3-1.
The American team plays Norway (1-4) on Sunday and Finland on Tuesday to close out the preliminary round. They are a virtual lock to advance to the quarterfinal round, but Finland will be a big test.
Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks and Charlie McAvoy of the Boston Bruins led the way against South Korea, which qualified for the world championships for the first time.
Both Kane and McAvoy each had two goals and three assists. Cam Atkinson also had two goals.
“Give (South Korea) credit, they were moving the puck around well to score, but we felt it was a matter of time before the floodgates were open and our offense got going,” Atksinon said after the game.
“We switched a couple of things up today putting different guys on different units.” Atkinson added. “We got an opportunity to see how those units worked today but it was one of those games that no matter the score you still need to be alert, play hard and the right way.”
Team USA is looking to win its first world championship title since 1960. Its last medal — a bronze — came in 2015.
