Watch: MLB Pitcher Drops 3 Different People with Single 99-MPH Fastball
If this was a dodgeball, it would be the shot of a lifetime. Unfortunately for Chicago Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish, it’s baseball, where hitting people is not a good thing.
With one pitch, the hard-throwing right-hander plunked three different people.
In the bottom of the sixth inning Monday against the Miami Marlins, Darvish was facing Lewis Brinson with two outs.
He hit Brinson in the hip with a 99 mph fastball. The ball then ricocheted and struck both catcher Wilson Contreras and umpire Brian O’Nora.

That’s not something you see every day, or even every decade.

Brinson did leave the game after the end of that inning, but the injury wasn’t considered serious.
Otherwise, it was a pretty good outing for Darvish (1-2). He gave up four hits and two runs in 5.2 innings to earn his first win of the season.
He had gotten bombed in his first three starts, giving up 11 runs and walking 11. He had a 7.50 ERA before this game, but the Marlins game lowered it to 6.11.
Darvish, 32, has been a disappointment since he signed a six-year, $126 million deal with the Cubs in February 2018. Last year, he battled injuries all year and made only starts, going 1-3 with a 4.80 ERA.
Brinson wasn’t the only batter hit in the game. Kris Bryant was hit twice and Contreras got plunked in the fifth inning by Trevor Richards. He had words with catcher Chad Wallach as he went to first.
“I didn’t say anything to nobody. I said it to myself,” Contreras said, reported MLB. “I don’t want to get my wrist broken or my hand broken. I got a little emotional, yes, and I should. I know that the pitcher doesn’t want to hit me in that situation. That’s why I didn’t say anything to him. That was to myself.”
Then Contreras responded with his bat, blasting a home run in the seventh.
The Cubs won 5-2 to improve to 6-9, while the Marlins fell to 4-13.
