Watch: Pitcher Shows Off Incredible Acrobatic Ability To Pull Off Impressive Play
The Houston Astros’ pitching staff was under assault all night Wednesday by Seattle Mariners hitters, who pounded out 13 hits in a 14-1 romp.
About the only highlight of the night for Houston came from starter Brad Peacock, who made a spectacular defensive play to avoid getting hit with a hard ground ball up the middle.
The play occurred in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Peacock was cruising along, nursing a 1-0 lead, when the Mariners’ Mitch Haniger drilled a hard grounder right back at him.
Peacock, who was in his follow through, had to lean back and contort his body to field the ball right in front of his face.
He fell to the ground, but got up and threw out Haniger at first.
“Oh my goodness, what a play by Peacock,” one of the Astros announcers said, while the other commentator exclaimed: “How did he catch that?”
“In a different version of the Collin McHugh ‘Matrix’ play, Peacock somehow gloved that baseball on a comebacker to retire Mitch Haniger,” the first announcer added.
“How are his body parts still attached?” the other commentator asked. “He went with the McTwist.”
“This is incredible,” he added.
The Mariners scored twice in the fifth on a two-run single by Mallex Smith to take a 2-1 lead. Peacock left the game after that inning, and the floodgates opened.
Reymin Guduan came in to start the sixth for Houston, only to give up a two-run homer to Domingo Santana.

Later that inning, Brady Rodgers came in for Guduan and allowed a two-run homer to Tom Murphy and a three-run blast to Edwin Encarnacion.

By the end of the sixth inning, the Mariners led 9-1.
Two home runs later — courtesy of Mac Williamson and Kyle Seager — the Mariners ended up with a 14-1 victory.
The Mariners hit five home runs in the game to give them 114 for the season, which is tied with the Twins for most in the majors.
“Yay for us,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said of the victory after the game, according to The Seattle Times.
It’s been a rough year for the Mariners, who, at 26-39, are in last place in the AL West.
Seattle is 17 games behind the first-place Astros, and the Mariners had come into Wednesday’s game have lost four in a row.
“We’re finally on the good side of one of those games. We were due. We’ve certainly wore a few of those this year. It was really a nice win. [Starting pitcher] Mike Leake threw the ball really, really well,” Servais said.
Leake (5-6) pitched a complete game, allowing one run on six hits. Peacock (5-3) took the loss.
