Watch: UFC Fighter Wins, Immediately Takes Mic to Talk Kavanaugh

Share

If you’re even tangentially aware that a mixed martial arts promotion called UFC exists, you’ve undoubtedly heard about UFC 229. Depending on who you ask, Saturday’s event was either a crown jewel or a black eye for the sport of MMA.

UFC 229’s main event featured undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov facing megastar Conor McGregor. Nurmagomedov won in the fourth round after forcing McGregor to submit.

What should have been a story about Nurmagomedov imposing his will against one of the best fighters in the world ultimately gave way to the post-fight fracas.

Nurmagomedov went berserk following his win, and tried to attack one of McGregor’s trainers. The ensuing melee involved members of both fighters’ teams, cheap shots and an endless stream of security guards.

The spectacle of it all was enough to propel UFC into the public discourse. Something else that’s been prominently in the public discourse in recent weeks? The confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Did you watch UFC 229?

Whether you love or hate Kavanaugh and whatever it is you think he represents, it’s undeniable that virtually everyone had some sort of opinion on him.

One UFC fighter, Nik Lentz, shared his opinion of Kavanaugh at UFC 229.

Lentz, who beat lightweight Gray Maynard on the UFC 229 early prelims, immediately addressed Kavanaugh in his post-fight interview.

“First and foremost, I want to give a shout out to my homie Brett Kavanaugh,” Lentz said. “Way to go, Special K.”

Lentz laughed a bit before answering interviewer Joe Rogan’s other questions.

Of note, Lentz’s comments received both cheers and jeers from the jam-packed Las Vegas crowd.

This is hardly the first time a UFC fighter has opted to dabble in politics following a win. In fact, this isn’t even the first time that a UFC fighter has offered some pro-Trump rhetoric.

Colby “Chaos” Covington once used his post-fight interview at UFC 225 to talk up Trump while skewering sports teams that were politicizing the traditional champions’ White House photo op.

“I’m going to do what a real American should do. I’m bringing this belt to the White House and I’m putting it on Donald Trump’s desk,” Covington told Rogan.

“How dare you not kneel for the national anthem, how dare you not accept President Trump’s offer to the office?” Covington said in a follow-up interview. “There’s men and women losing their lives, sweating blood and tears … so you can eat off silver spoons and have your little Bentleys.”

Better yet, Covington ultimately got a chance to meet Trump at the White House following his comments.

If Lentz keeps this up, maybe he can be invited to sit in on a Supreme Court hearing. Or maybe not.

Either way, if the UFC keeps up its political rhetoric, perhaps people will be quicker to forget the mayhem that marred UFC 229.
