Country Singer Reveals How Heartwarming Man-to-Man Talk with Future Father-in-Law Led to Marriage

Share

Marriage is a team effort. Celebrities might look as if they have it all together on the red carpet, but they face the same struggles in relationships as anyone else — maybe even more to a certain degree.

When you’re an entertainer, you’re on the road, traveling, on tour or whatnot. All that time away from one’s spouse can be daunting, maybe even tempting.

It’s those who are committed and in it for the long haul that last. Those who understand what it takes to overcome the trials — together.

Country music star Thomas Rhett and his wife Lauren Akins married in 2012 but their love story was years in the making before they ever said “I do.”

The pair met in middle school and were friends for years before Rhett ever worked up the courage to admit he wanted more.

“It was a sliding-door moment, where it could’ve gone the other way,” Rhett recalled in an interview with HITS Daily Double. “We were dating other people. In another world, we might have married them. But there was always something different about Lauren, and we both felt it, but we never figured it out. “

In the end, it was a conversation with his future father-in-law that gave Rhett the push he needed. “The night of her sister’s graduation party, we were buddies and I was there,” he said.

“I’d loved that girl since high school, and I told her father how I felt,” Rhett went on. “He said, ‘If you don’t tell her, I’m going to.’ It was a total Ryan Gosling moment. I said to her, ‘I just want to kiss you one time. If you don’t feel anything, we can go back to being friends.'”

The two have been kissing ever since and share two beautiful little girls together — 3-and-a-half-year-old Willa Gray and 22-month-old Ada James.

It hasn’t always been easy and the couple has had to work together — and apart — over the years. “She has to give a lot to me, and I have to give a lot to her — not have to but want to,” the artist shared with HITS.

“There’s never a dull moment,” Lauren Akins told PEOPLE in a 2017 interview after the pair became parents. “We’re tired, but we’re happy!”
