Gingrich Slams 'Crazy' Dems, Says Debate's Big Winner Was Trump
Newt Gingrich still cuts to the chase.
The morning after Tuesday’s Democratic debate in Detroit, while liberals were trying to decide the winners and losers of the clash, the former House speaker and architect of the Republican House takeover in 1994 had only one winner in mind.
And that’s the man the Democrats are hoping to replace.
“It was a really good night for Donald Trump,” Gingrich told Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” Wednesday.
“He could hardly have hoped for a better debate,” the former speaker said. “You had a handful of rational moderates, [like] Congressman [John] Delaney. … Their soundbites are perfect and would replace probably half of the Trump ads next year because they come out and tell the truth. This stuff is crazy.”
Beyond the personalities — Sen. Bernie Sanders was in particularly fine, cantankerous form — Gingrich noted that the candidates’ positions on health care and illegal immigration were far from those of most voters.
“I just think that, looking at the polling data, the gap between self-identified Democrats, on the one hand, and independents and Republicans on the other, on these kinds of issues, is really remarkably big,” he said.
And that could be great news for the president’s reelection effort.
The values Democrats demonstrated at the debate weren’t in sync with political reality, Gingrich told the “Fox & Friends” crew.
“Decriminalizing crossing the border so you have no control while also offering tax-paid health care for illegal immigrants is probably not very smart,” he said.
At 76, Gingrich has been in American politics for a long time, and as a historian, as well as a staunch conservative, he has a perspective on the country that not all politicians share.
And he doesn’t see the Democrats on an upward trajectory.
“I think it’s going to be interesting to watch the evolution of the next couple of months, because the core of the Democratic Party is very, very left wing — almost irrationally anti-Trump, to the point where they’re just going to stand around and chant and scream,” he told “Fox & Friends.”
That much was on display on Tuesday night. And it’s what made it such a good night for Donald Trump — and his reelection campaign.
