ICE Official Schools Clueless Dem, Forced To Remind Her That Illegal Aliens Are Breaking the Law
It would appear that some Democrats have become so invested in their “open borders” stance that they forget there are quite a few duly-passed immigration laws on the books that make it a crime to illegally enter this country.
One such example is Democrat Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono, who seemed to think that immigrants were being detained and prosecuted for illegal entry solely due to President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy at the southern border, and otherwise would be free to come and go as they pleased.
According to The Daily Wire, Hirono’s ignorance actually compelled an official with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to spell out the applicable statute in the United States Code that makes illegal entry a crime worthy of prosecution, but even then Hirono seemed incapable of understanding.
The brief back-and-forth that left Hirono admittedly “confused” took place during a hearing Tuesday about the court-ordered reunification of migrant families that had been temporarily separated following their illegal entry and subsequent prosecution by the U.S. government.
The unlucky soul who attempted to explain the existing law to the senator was Matthew Albence, executive associate director for enforcement and removal operations for ICE, the same agency that many of Hirono’s colleagues have demanded be abolished.
Hirono asked, in reference to the detainment and reunification centers, “Mr. Albence, would you send your children to FRCs?”
“Again, I think we’re missing the point. These individuals are there because they have broken a law. There has to be a process,” Albence replied.
The senator interrupted the witness and ignorantly proclaimed, “They have broken a law only as deemed so by the president with his …” but Albence interrupted Hirono right back.
“No, ma’am. They are there for violation of Title 8 of the U.S. Nationality Act,” he retorted.
“OK,” Albence continued. “U.S.C. 1325. That’s illegal entry. It’s both a criminal and civil violation. They are in those FRCs pending the outcome of that civil immigration process. They have broken the law.”
Hirono brought up Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy again and attempted to suggest there was now some sort of differentiation between the civil and criminal aspects of the law.
Albence further explained, “There are criminal proceedings when Border Patrol prosecuted them, but at the conclusion of that process, once the individual came into ICE custody, they would go through administrative proceedings.”
After a couple seconds of stunned silence, Hirono admitted, “I’m confused.”
Indeed, the good senator from Hawaii is quite confused if she is incapable of understanding that, as existing law makes perfectly clear, it is a crime to illegally enter this country, a crime that will be prosecuted under this current administration.
It really isn’t that difficult of a concept to grasp, but Democrats have become increasingly averse to the reality around them and have ensconced themselves in some sort of alternate reality where they just make up the rules as they go.
Unfortunately for them, that doesn’t fly in the real world, where criminals are prosecuted for the crimes they’ve committed so long as those crimes are still listed as such in the U.S. Code.
