Iowa Is Already Shaping Up To Be a Bloodbath for Most 2020 Democrats
The Iowa Democratic caucuses, scheduled to take place on Feb. 3, 2020, are known to bring out the best and worst in presidential hopefuls — and for many, it will mark the end of a long and oftentimes expensive road to get there. Others will be rewarded with golden tickets to their next stop, along with a likely boost in polling numbers.
Until then, candidates with dismal polling numbers will virtually say or do anything for a much-needed jolt — and the ones at the top will buckle down and do everything they can to maintain their lead. We see it every single election season.
Right now, we’re in the calm before the storm. And if this campaign season’s “storm” is anything even close to what went down in 2016, you’d better bring in the tomato plants, because it’s gonna get nasty out there.
According to a compilation of FiveThirtyEight surveys and polls, former Vice President Joe Biden holds a solid lead against the rest of the pack.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is currently Biden’s closest and most consistent competitor, holding on to second place since Biden entered the race.
However, things get heated down the list.
South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren have been scrapping for the coveted third-place slot, rotating in the bronze-medal spot.
The remaining hopefuls appear to be fighting for a chance to compete with the top contenders.
Candidates such as Sens. Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar and Cory Booker are all polling in the single digits.
Of course, there is plenty of time to make big moves and bump the numbers, but the caucus will be here before they know it.
If they’ve got any political aces up their sleeves, they’d better think about playing them sooner than later.
Interactions between Democratic candidates have been pretty cordial so far, but that could change on a dime when rivals begin the skeleton-digging and fling as much mud as they can.
It’s worth noting that Biden’s comfortable lead could be a big problem for the Democratic party, as President Donald Trump believes a race against the former vice president could be a breeze.
“I’d rather run against Biden. I think he’s the weakest mentally. He’s the weakest up here,” Trump told reporters, gesturing to his head.
“The others have much more energy.”
Trump thinks the former VP is so absent of energy that he cursed him with a classic Trump nickname: “Sleepy Joe.”

After Trump’s massacre of “low-energy” Jeb Bush in the 2016 primary season — which many say contributed to his downfall — being called “sleepy” could end up hurting Biden more than he realizes at the moment.
This Democratic primary will be a battle between the old guard and young blood — and it will likely be entertaining like nothing else.
