Watch: NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio Gets Booed as He Lights Rockefeller Christmas Tree on National TV

Share

To call liberal Democratic New York Mayor Bill de Blasio “unliked” would be a resounding understatement.

It’s pretty clear to see why.

When de Blasio isn’t praising socialism, he’s forgetting to mention terrorism victims from his own state by name. It’s bad enough that even some Democrats want nothing to do with him.

And while surely some would rather just overthrow de Blasio a la Moammar Gaddafi, that’s not how America really works.

In lieu of an actual coup, however, de Blasio’s detractors have devised much more entertaining ways to needle the mayor. They’ve decided to just humiliate him as much as possible in public settings.

De Blasio was mercilessly booed at a Columbus Day parade, per The New York Times, after he posited the possibility of removing historical monuments — including those honoring Christopher Columbus.

De Blasio was also shown up by his own police force on a couple of occasions. As ABC News notes, just days after hundreds of police officers turned their backs on de Blasio at another officer’s funeral, the mayor was again booed at a police graduation ceremony.

Many officers felt that, amid unprecedented backlash and anti-police rhetoric, de Blasio did not have their backs. Given the mayor’s liberal rhetoric, it’s hard to blame the officers.

But de Blasio’s most embarrassing humiliation yet was saved for the ceremonial Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Center on Wednesday night.

The lighting of the tree, which has happened every year since 1931, has been a staple of the Christmas season. NBC aired it as a live special on Wednesday night.

While the special was punctuated by live performances from musical artists including John Legend, Tony Bennett, Diana Krall and Diana Ross, the most vociferous reaction of the night was reserved for de Blasio.

The mayor was blasted with boos from the New York crowd when he was introduced before flipping the switch for the 72-foot-tall Christmas tree.

Frankly, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

While de Blasio handily won re-election last year, his popularity has been steadily declining. Aside from the aforementioned liberal drivel that de Blasio has been peddling, there have been numerous unsavory headlines attached to the mayor that have nothing to do with his ideological leanings.

De Blasio’s administration has been rocked by corruption scandals recently, primarily involving the bribery of police officers. The New York Daily reports that a de Blasio donor admitted to trying to bribe police officers with prostitutes. A New York Post report details emails sent between de Blasio’s office linked to the mayor allegedly helping an ex-NYPD chief to become commissioner through illicit means.

I don’t generally like to congratulate New York on anything, but good job New Yorkers. Boo that man. He deserves it.
