Good Samaritan Rushes into Flames and Pulls Driver’s Body from Burning Car
In the Bible, John 15:13 tells us this: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
But what about complete strangers? Are we expected to risk our own lives to save someone we’ve never even met?
A group of good Samaritans from Mississippi seems to think so. They didn’t hesitate to help strangers in need after a horrific car wreck on Tuesday, May 7.
One of those good Samaritans was Robert Davis, a Jackson man who told WJTV, “None of us are perfect people, but we were at the perfect place at the perfect time for God to use us.”
Davis witnessed the accident that took place on the I-220 South as he was riding home from work with his boss. Together they stepped in to see how they could help.
“The car fish tailed 3 to 4 times & rammed into the pole,” Davis told Liftable, a section of The Western Journal. Davis’ boss urged him to call 911 and then the two headed over to assess the situation.
“We ran to the car & smoke had blackened the windows of the vehicle from the inside,” Davis said. “The hood was up, bent and on fire already.”
Davis’ boss tried to help the driver first, but the door wouldn’t budge and the driver was unresponsive. Then Davis attempted to open the door.
“Somehow God allowed it to open!!” he said. “I snatched the driver out & drug her to safety.”
Next he and his boss, along with other strangers who’d shown up to help, moved on to the remaining passengers. One of the victims was covered in blood and the seatbelt had wrapped around her neck, complicating the rescue.
“I managed to unwrap the seatbelt from around her neck, and unlatch the seatbelt from around her waist, and I drug her to safety,” Davis told WJTV.
Flames were spreading as the group worked together to try and save the lives of all the victims. Sadly, the two passengers did not survive.
When we asked Davis what moved him to act in such a heroic way, he explained there had been another story he’d seen recently about a young man who had burned alive in a car fire.
“I couldn’t let [that] happen in front of me…” he told Liftable. “There were times when hopelessness tried setting in.”
Davis said his boss prayed out loud and that really motivated him to continue, even with the danger that lay before him.
“In Mississippi we’re taught to be there for each other…” he told WJTV. “This is the hospitality state… we speak and we hug and we love and we share and we reach for each other.”
The way he and those strangers worked together is evidence his statement is true. He told Liftable he “couldn’t have done it alone.”
“This wouldn’t have been possible without the 2 Mother lions (Antionett Blk& Shadow Robinson) that were there, the Man with the hammer & the Man in all white,” Davis shared on Facebook.
“Even Officer Jacquie Amos arriving on the scene played a huge part in how things went,” Davis continued. “We all did the best we could to assure the lives of those young people would continue. Outside of stopping the car before the accident started, there was nothing more we could’ve done.”
This particular story has a heartbreaking outcome, but it’s comforting to know that there are still good people out there who are willing to risk their lives for others even in the most harrowing situations.
According to WJTV, Davis loves to help his community and is the founder of the Better Men Society. He is a truly selfless man who thinks of others before himself.
