Joanna Gaines Shares Adorable Throwback Photo in Honor of Son Crew's First Birthday

HGTV star and entrepreneur Joanna Gaines is reminding parents and fans everywhere that children are a blessing no matter when they show up. According to People, Gaines’ youngest child, little Crew, celebrated his first birthday on June 21.

The next day Gaines took to Instagram. She shared a series of photos chronicling her tiny guy’s life.

The first showed the four older Gaines children clustered around a hospital door. You can tell from their ducked heads and hunched postures that they’re awaiting any sound signaling the arrival of their new sibling.

Other images show Gaines in the hospital bed, ready for delivery as one of her daughters speaks with her. A black-and-white picture features a newly delivered Crew.

The remainder feature the other children holding the new little life. And a beaming Chip Gaines has Crew bundled up in a car seat.

“One year ago,” Gaines captioned the series of pictures. “What a gift you are to all of us sweet boy.”

“A year ago, he wasn’t in our lives. Now you’re like, ‘How?’” she added to People. “I think what’s so crazy about kids is by the time they hit the ground … it’s almost like we always knew he was coming, and this was his time.”

Fans of the decorating star know that Crew was an unexpected surprise. But Motherly reported that the way it coincided with the couple’s decision to take a break from their HGTV show “Fixer Upper” must have made some wonder if it was planned.

“Chip and I made a choice to take some time off this past year because it seemed best for us in that season — even though we knew it would stretch us to stay still. Only a few weeks later I found out I was pregnant,” Joanna said.

She added that she really believed her childbearing days were behind her. “And yet, after eight years, here I am with a newborn in my arms,” she said.

Gaines knows that humor helps lighten challenging situations. She isn’t above poking fun at her incredibly full quiver of kids.

“I kid with people, ‘If you ever want to feel young again, have a baby at 40.’ It’s brought this whole new thing for me where I’m a lot more laid-back,” she said. “People joke that I’m the ‘Fun Jo’ now.”

However, Gaines has admitted that some things have needed to change.

Gone are the days of tightly planned schedules. What’s more, Crew often finds himself tagging along with mama to business meetings.

Despite the challenges of managing an infant in middle age, Gaines’ little cherub must bring her a lot of delight. She has even refused to rule out the possibility of providing Crew with a sibling close to his own age.

“I thought I was done, and then we had Crew,” she said. “We’ve never been planners anyway.”
