Owner's Find on Security Footage That Hero Dog Helped Save Best Friend from Drowning

Share

With summer just around the corner, many states are already heating up. For some people, summer is the only tolerable time of year, but for others, it’s miserable and oppressive.

Our pets have to deal with seasonal changes, too, and owners have to be careful to keep an eye on the temperature to make sure their pets aren’t out in extreme heat.

One way to beat the heat — for humans and critters — is to take a dip in a pool.

There are even some dogs who love this summertime activity and live for the chance to jump in, whether that’s in a muddy pond, a lake, a tub, or a pool.

Just like with children, it’s important to teach dogs how to behave in and around pools. If a dog falls into a pool unsupervised and doesn’t know where the stairs to get out are, they can drown.

If a dog is old, weak, ill, or very young, they can also be at risk while in a pool.

Even if the owner is just around the corner, it can take only a matter of minutes before a dog is at risk if they aren’t strong enough to keep swimming on their own.

One dog’s owners were reminded of that recently. Their dog, Smokey, would sometimes splash into the shallow end of their pool to cool off, but he wasn’t a very good swimmer.

Remus, a friend’s dog, came over for a playdate and the two somehow got into the pool area. Their owner was home but didn’t know that the dogs were near the pool.

The two had played around the pool plenty of times while supervised, so they probably thought everything was business as usual.

But then Smokey fell in the pool and got trapped in the deep end. Instead of trying to head for the shallow end, he kept trying to get out in the middle of the pool.

When you watch the video, you can see Smokey’s head bob up and down as he struggles to stay afloat. The poor dog doesn’t look like he’ll last long.

Remus knew what to do. He looks like he was trying to encourage his friend or grab at his collar to drag him out, but that wasn’t working.

So Remus jumped right in behind Smokey, and somehow managed to help push Smokey up so he could pull himself up out of the pool.

Other than wet dogs and wet cement around the pool, no one would have known what had happened. But when Smokey’s owner saw his wet coat, he decided to check the security camera.

“When we saw the footage we were amazed and our hearts filled with joy,” said Smokey’s owner. “My best friend (Remus’ owner) cried when we sent her the video. She says he’s a certified lifeguard now.”

Smokey clearly saved his pal’s day, and it’s safe to say he will probably be invited back for many more doggy playdates!
