'American Idol' Contestant Brings Katy Perry to Tears with Incredible Profession of Faith

One thing talent shows never fail to provide is a reason to pull out the tissues and root for the underdog. Move over, “America’s Got Talent.” Hold the microphone, “The Voice.”

“American Idol” is back and we can’t stop bawling over these amazing stories the contestants are sharing with America.

Last week we saw Luke Bryan get up and sing alongside contestant Ethan Payne. Their backstory is one to remember.

Now it’s Katy Perry’s turn to get goosebumps because Kalifa Wilson, who goes by the name “Kai the Singer,” has a story that reminds Perry of her own upbringing.

In a 2018 interview, Perry talked with CBN about brokenness and how it led her to open up to “a greater, higher power.”

“It gave me a new foundation. It’s not just a material foundation: it’s a soul foundation,” she said.

While Perry’s music and brand are certainly on the secular side of things, there seems to be more to Perry than meets the common eye.

Did Kai the Singer's story make you cry?

Her reaction to Wilson’s story and audition only shows Perry’s heart as she talks about where she came from and how it changed her life.

“When I was 13, the church bought me a guitar,” Perry said. She went on to tell Wilson how much she related to the 19-year-old’s backstory.

Wilson has grown up in shelters and even said that her family was once homeless and lived in a car. Her family still struggles to make ends meet and she doesn’t even have a bed.

Through it all, the “American Idol” hopeful has kept a positive attitude and remained strong in her faith, thanking God for her place in life.

Wilson said it was because of her church she was even able to audition for the show. Much like Perry, Wilson’s church gave her the guitar she holds in her hands.

What an incredible journey she has had with more good things to come, we’re sure. We can’t wait to see what she sings next.
