Police Dog with Cancer Honored by 20 Officers Before She Was Scheduled To Be Put Down
Some pets are meant for cuddling. They’re a part of the family, the home, and life just wouldn’t be the same without them.
While any pet is a wonderful addition to the family, some four-legged friends mean so much more to so many more.
Police dogs — K-9s — are specially trained animals that work as a team with the officer who trains and cares for them.
According to How Stuff Works, a K-9 dog remains with his or her assigned partner “24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
Although these special dogs work directly with one person on a regular basis, they still serve their department and community as a whole.
One very special Emergency Services K-9 was honored on Nov. 5 by the New York Police Department — more than 20 officers saluted Angel, a bloodhound who served the department faithfully until cancer took hold.
Officer Manuel Orellana, Angel’s partner in fighting crime, shared his heartfelt sentiments regarding the ill pup with NY Daily News.
“She was a trooper, man. She was strong,” Orellana shared. “She’s gonna be missed. She was a good dog … She was my woman.”

According to an NYPD Facebook post, Angel was named after another officer, Detective Rafael Ramos, who died in the line of duty.
Angel was reportedly excellent at her job. Lt. Richard Sanossian told the NY Daily News that the bloodhound’s special gift was her nose.
“A very good dog. Unbelievable nose,” he said. “This dog is tracking on asphalt in an urban environment, which makes it even harder.”
During her 5 years of life, Angel earned an award from the American Kennel Club for her service. She found two missing autistic children and also tracked down criminals. Sadly, she was put down following the department’s tribute.
She is clearly a dog who will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Our regards go out to Officer Orellana who, no doubt, is taking this loss the hardest of all.
