When Woman Spins in Homemade Ball Gown It Completely Transforms into a Butterfly

Share

When Cinderella attends a ball, she goes in style. And just like the fairy godmother transformed those old rags into something magical, one woman has become her own fairy godmother, taking it upon herself to turn one dress into another.

While Ivy Thompson’s gown isn’t necessarily a rags to riches story, it is certainly as awe-inspiring as any Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.

In 2017, the self-taught seamstress decided she wanted to create something unique for the Venice is Sinking masquerade ball in Seattle.

The event takes place annually and certainly looks like an experience to remember. Thompson first attended the Venetian carnival ball in 2017 and she wanted it to be memorable.

“I didn’t quite know what to expect,” she wrote on her blog, Sewing Magic. “But based on photos from past events it definitely looked like everyone goes all out.”

And “go all out” she did. Drawing on inspiration from some transforming gowns she had seen, Thompson set to work creating her own “spin” on a two-in-one dress to remember.

Would you wear this butterfly gown?

“The most difficult part about getting this gown from concept to reality was figuring out how to do the transformation in one smooth motion,” she shared in a video for Insider.

A front snap panel and lace-up back made her vision possible. Watch as her dress changes before your eyes. She looks so graceful!

“I wanted to push myself to do something I wouldn’t normally do,” she wrote. “The only thing better than wearing one ball gown is wearing as many ball gowns as you can possibly fit on your body at one time.”

Her creativity and hard work paid off, too. The end result was stunning and she even made a coat and vest for her fiancé.

Though Thompson didn’t win the costume contest, according to Instagram, that didn’t discourage her from making more of her beautiful creations.

She’s even started on her ice queen gown for the 2019 ball, which takes place in February. A sneak peek was shared on her Instagram account.

What do you think of this talented gal’s creations? I’d say she has a bright future ahead of her in costume design. Maybe we’ll even see her designs on the silver screen one day.
