Report: Trump Just Ensured Super Bowl Numbers Will Suck
A stunning decision made this week by President Donald Trump bodes very badly for the upcoming Super Bowl game and the network slated to broadcast it, NBC.
According to Variety magazine, the president intends to skip the customary “pre-game interview between the commander-in-chief and the news unit of the network hosting the game,” making it a first for him and a possible first for this tradition.
When Fox hosted the Super Bowl last year, Trump sat for a wide-ranging interview with Fox News host Bill O’Reilly.
When CBS hosted the game in 2016, then-President Barack Obama and his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, likewise conducted an interview with CBS News.
Though it remains unclear whether Trump skipping the interview with NBC will mark the first time a sitting president has ever foregone it, it’s fairly certain his noninvolvement with the Super Bowl will undoubtedly damper its ratings.
Of course, many already anticipate poor ratings for the game simply for the fact that NBC reportedly intends to cover any national anthem protests.
“The Super Bowl is a live event … and when you’re covering a live event, you’re covering what’s happening. So if there are players that choose to kneel, they will be shown live,” NBC’s Super Bowl LII executive producer Fred Gaudelli announced earlier this month, as reported by Adweek.
A large number of Americans detest these protests, including the president, whom over 62 million Americans voted for in the presidential election two years ago.
“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a b**ch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired. He’s fired!'” the president said during a rally last year for then-Alabama senatorial candidate Luther Strange.
Since then, the NFL’s ratings have continued to slide “with no end in sight,” as noted recently by the New York Post.
And with the Super Bowl slated to be hosted by NBC, a virulently anti-Trump network with a history of lying about the president, fewer Americans — particular any who supports our president — are likely to watch this year’s game, let alone the halftime show.
In fact, a recent a recent study by the Media Research Center’s NewsBusters found that 90 percent of NBC’s coverage of the president last year was negative.
So again, why should any patriotic American who loves his/her country and its president tune in?
For what … to see the anti-Trump zealots at NBC proudly zoom in as a bunch of spoiled, multimillionaire athletes disrespect the national anthem?
I don’t think so. Or, in the words of every true New Yorker, “Fuhgeddaboudit!”
