Two-Year-Old Screams for Joy Moment He Hears Mother's Voice for Very First Time

When it comes to navigating our environment, many human beings seem to focus on their sense of sight. But hearing also plays a huge role in the way we interact with everything around us.

For young children, in particular, the ability to hear is crucial to proper development of speech, language, and social skills. So any amount of hearing loss can put a youngster at a profound disadvantage.

That’s why it’s concerning to realize that this particular problem is so prevalent among kids. The Hearing Loss Association of America estimates that roughly 20 percent of Americans report some degree of trouble with their hearing — and that 2-3 of every 1,000 American children are born with evident hearing issues in one or both ears.

Maybe that’s why a recent social media video is rapidly going viral. In a way that’s both touching and triumphant, it shows what happens when a totally deaf, two-year-old toddler named Caleb gets to hear for the very first time.

Certainly, it’s tough to confirm what may have caused Caleb’s actual hearing loss. For many children, the issue is simply congenital — they’re born with compromised hearing that ranges anywhere from mild to absolute.

For other kids, the problem is acquired. The website healthyhearing.com lists numerous factors that may contribute to hearing loss in babies, toddlers, grade-schoolers, and teens.

According to the site, external causes might include infections, a perforated eardrum, exposure to loud noises, serious head injury, even secondhand smoke. But for any child who’s impacted, cause arguably becomes secondary to identifying the most effective intervention.

And clearly, all little Caleb cares about is that he’s suddenly picking up sounds. Thanks to his new implanted device, he can hear voices where before there was nothing but silence.

One of those voices belongs to his grateful mother. Clearly overcome, she gazes at her overjoyed son and bursts into ecstatic tears.

Caleb, for his part, beams into the camera and broadly grins from ear to ear. Then he does something that’s reducing many viewers to tears: He puts his tiny hands together, gazes up toward the sky, and screams so he can hear the jubilant noise for himself.

“Your dream, my reality,” reads Caleb’s bright orange tee shirt. And for this little boy and his elated family, the amazing gift of hearing is truly a dream come true.
