US Hits Iranian Island with 'Defensive' Strike

U.S. forces have slapped down an attempt by Iran to expand its missile capacity near the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. airstrikes on Monday targeted Qeshm Island, which is located near the northern entrance of the Strait of Hormuz, according to The Washington Post.

One U.S. official called the strike a “defensive measure” to protect U.S. forces from Iranian surface-to-air missiles.

Another official said missile launchers were targeted in the attack.

Another said the strikes hit Iranian missile launchers.

American officials made no public announcements about the strike.

U.S. forces have exchanged attacks with Iran’s military multiple times in recent weeks, according to The Wall Street Journal.

On Monday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired a surface-to-air missile at a U.S. fighter, which fired back.

An IRGC missile fired from Qeshm toward commercial shipping was downed, an official said.

President Donald Trump indicated that from his perspective, the weeks of sparring and jostling in the skies over the Middle East do not indicate a return to all-out war.

“We had a war with Iran. We won,” Trump said Monday, “I don’t know if you even call it a war, because we haven’t been doing any fighting for months.”

The Wall Street Journal has raised expectations that there could be a flare of military action after Tuesday’s midterm elections, noting that Trump has been given multiple military options.

The U.S. has told Gulf nations a brief spate of attacks could follow the voting.

The Washington Post noted that Trump on Monday said an attack on the Pickaxe Mountain site where a remnant of Iran’s nuclear program exists could be possible.

“It’s not a big deal,” Trump said. “We can do that in literally one hour, as soon as we want, at any time that we want.”

Trump has said Iran is playing politics by refusing to agree to a deal to end the war, in hopes that the failure to conclude hostilities will hurt Trump and the Republican Party at the polls.

In response to a question about his intentions Tuesday, Trump told “Fox & Friends” that “we’ll see.”

“I’m not looking to, you know, kill lots of people, but if we have to, we’ll have to,” Trump said, according to Fox News. “But I’m not looking to do that. And we’re very strong right now.

“Iran is the number one state sponsor of terror in the world. They are the meanest. They’re very tough,” Trump said. “I see why the Middle East was afraid of them. They’re very tough, but they’ve been decapitated.”

“Every ship is at the bottom of the sea. They had 288 airplanes. Every airplane is laying on small little pieces, tiny little pieces all over the runways of Iran,” Trump said.

“They have no airplanes. They have no anti-aircraft. We took some out last night. It’s just a minor attack. It wasn’t war. They built an anti-aircraft facility. It took them about two months. We watched it get built; as soon as it was completed, we hit it last night very nicely,” he said.
