14. John Tyler

He was the first president to hold the position without being elected, after his predecessor William Henry Harrison died in office in April of 1841.

During his administration his states’-righter agenda he strengthened the presidency. After the southern states seceded in 1861, Tyler worked to create the Southern Confederacy.

Tyler died in 1862 at the age of 71, as a member of the Confederate House of Representatives.
