NFL Star Currently in Jail To Be Released Early
Former Oakland Raiders cornerback Sean Smith will be released from jail earlier than expected.
The former Raider was arrested on Aug. 17, 2017, for assaulting his sister’s then-boyfriend six weeks earlier.
Smith was charged with felony assault.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Smith “beat and then stomped the head” of his sister’s boyfriend and “inflicted great bodily injury.”
The victim reportedly had to have a metal plate and screws implanted underneath his right eye. He also had reconstructive surgery on his left eye socket to repair five fractures.
Smith pleaded guilty to the assault and in March of this year was sentenced to one year in jail and five years probation.
However, TMZ Sports reported Monday that Smith will be released Sept. 5 after serving only half of his sentence. The report said it was due to good behavior and jail overcrowding.

He could conceivably play in the league this year if a team picks him up.
However, it’s likely, should he be signed, that he will receive a suspension from the NFL upon his release for violated the league’s conduct policy.
Smith had signed a four-year, $40 million deal with the Raiders in March 2016. The team cut him this past March.
Smith was drafted by the Dolphins in the second round in 2009 out of Utah.
He played four years in Miami, followed by three in Kansas City, before signing with the Raiders.
Smith has been a starter throughout his career. He has 14 career interceptions.
This isn’t Smith’s only brush with the law. In 2014, while with the Chiefs, he was arrested after he crashed his vehicle into a light post in Kansas City.
Smith pleaded guilty to DUI charge and was sentenced to two years of probation.
