Twin Sisters Separated at Birth Reunited on TV. See Them Now, 1 Year Later
Audrey Doering and Gracie Rainsberry are twin sisters who were separated shortly after birth in China. Two different American families adopted the girls.
They were reunited on Good Morning America in January 2017. We had the privilege of witnessing the incredibly emotional and special moment for the twin sisters when they met for the first time on live TV.
Jennifer Doering, Audrey’s mother, and her husband had three boys before they adopted Audrey. But her husband had always wanted a fourth from the time they got married, which led them to Audrey.
As Audrey grew up, she shared her wish to have a sister. Doering knew Audrey came from a family where she had a sister but didn’t know she had a twin sister who was adopted by another American family.
When Doering found a photo thanks to the help of a Chinese researcher, she was shocked.
There were two little girls in it, one of them being Audrey — but she could hardly make out which was her own daughter.
Doering turned to the internet to find Audrey’s twin. Her method of finding her daughter’s twin on Facebook was successful, as she got in contact with Gracie’s mom, Nicole Rainsberry.
“Oh, it was unbelievable,” said Doering. “I’m like, ‘How?’ I mean, this is stuff you read about. And how, how could it really be that there are two of them?”
Gracie’s mom was equally shocked when she found out about her daughter’s twin. “I mean, it’s hard to process that information,” she admitted. “It was so crazy to be looking at what looked like Gracie, but knowing that it wasn’t Gracie.”
It’s been one year since the sisters first met each other on Good Morning America, so they were invited back to give an update.
Audrey and Gracie were not lacking in tears during their second appearance on the show, clearly still touched by the unfolding events that have happened in the past year.
Gracie said, “I’m not really sure how to explain it. It’s just like really special to have her.”
“The best thing is that we get to spend time together, and we get to like know each other and better,” Audrey explained.
In the past year, the families have gotten together four times, including the first time they celebrated a birthday together.
The twins video chat daily. Rainsberry acknowledged that raising them in two separate homes isn’t ideal, and some may even describe it as “tragic.”
She continued, “God’s turned it into such a beautiful story, and He’s used so many great opportunities that the girls have been given and our families have been given to just grow closer together and get to know each other.”
Both families agree they “have so much to look forward to.” We wish the best to these reunited sisters!
