Elderly Man Buys Valentine's Card & Roses for Wife That Died 3 Years Ago
Valentine’s Day is a holiday some may describe as a Hallmark holiday.
The commercial aspect of the day is difficult to ignore as aisles of pink and red products including cards, candy, and flowers fill stores around this time of year.
In many ways, true love cannot be represented by a product.
Those concerned with the commercialization of the holiday often voice the opinion that they don’t need to buy flowers or a card to show their love.
Yet, tangible reminders of one’s love for another can certainly be meaningful. In fact, one of the sweetest Valentine’s Day stories I’ve read took place, of all places, at a Hallmark store.
The Breast Cancer Awareness Facebook page shared the story of an unnamed customer at a Hallmark store. The customer was there to buy a birthday card for their mother.
They walked out of the store not only with a birthday card but also with a touching story. A elderly man was spotted browsing cards in the Valentine’s Day section.
He seemed to be taking his time to find the perfect card. Already, it’s a heartwarming image as it reinforces the idea that love can certainly grow with age.
However, the elderly man wouldn’t be handing the card directly to his wife. He was picking out a card to place on her grave.
The customer learned this because they decided to ask the man to whom he would be giving the card.
At the time this interaction took place, the man’s wife had been dead for three years.
She passed away from breast cancer. Days like Valentine’s Day could be particularly difficult, considering the love of his life was no longer with him.
The elderly man told the curious customer, “I still buy her roses and a card and bring them to her grave to prove to her that she was the only one that will ever have my heart.”
What a beautiful way to spend the holiday!
His love and dedication to his wife even after her death is inspiring.
