Heroic Bus Driver Runs Straight into Busy Intersection To Save Little Boy with Autism
There is nothing like being in the right place at the right time. One woman from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, might tell you that’s exactly where she was the day she saved a little boy from being hit by a car.
Cecilia Nation-Gardner is a bus driver for the Milwaukee County Transit System. On May 15, 2019, she was running behind and left her layover later than usual.
When she approached the corner of 35th Street and Vilet Street, she saw a 6-year-old boy was walking into oncoming traffic.
Nation-Gardner saw the terrifying scenario unfold before her eyes and started honking to warn other vehicles to watch out for the boy.
But the little boy was still in danger, wandering around in the middle of oncoming traffic.
“Stay right there! Stop!” Gardner can be heard yelling in the video shared by MCTS on Facebook.
The brave bus driver risked her own life and ran into the street. She took the boy’s hand and walked him to the safety of her bus before calling the police.
After police arrived on the scene, an investigation was conducted and they learned the boy had wandered away from school and that he has a disability.
“It was meant for me to be there,” Nation-Gardner said, according to CBS News. “God does everything for a reason.”
That he does. While many people would hail this woman as a hero, she says she’s not.
“This doesn’t make me a HERO,” she wrote on Facebook.
“This is my every day love for life and people,” Nation-Gardner added. “My heart has a lot of love for kids. Whether they mine or someone else’s.”
Thankfully the boy is reportedly safe with his family once more. MCTS noted in their video that this isn’t the first case of a bus driver saving a child’s life.
Cassandra Renee Garrett, the boy’s mom, commented on the video and thanked the bus driver for her amazing act and quick thinking.
“This Was My son That Wandered Off The School Property,” Garrett wrote. “He Has Autism And Epilepsy. Thank You [Cecilia] For Saving My Baby.”
